Re: what are your allergies?
Mon, December 27, 2004 - 7:48 PMI have asthma&My Doc did some blood tests&theytold me that I was allergic to basically everything,,except dust mites.Including cats&dogs,,,I have 7 dogs&&4cats.
I can easily manage my allergies,,by eating great&knowing what to avoid&what else to do.Like Yoga, the ultimate best thing to do isdo yoga at least everyday.it stretches my back&makes me feel a lot better than I ever did by strengthing my stomach muscles&a lot of minor muscles thatyou don't use to often but make a great differance when they are strong,,like the achilles tendon,,. -

Re: what are your allergies?
Mon, December 27, 2004 - 8:00 PMHi- I happen to work for an allergist/Asthma specialist in California. I am a nurse, have been a nurse for 20 years and can honestly say that I have learned more about this subject in the last 1-1/2 yrs since I've worked for the Doc. It is amazing how long people live with stuff that bothers them without knowing that they can feel so much better with treatment and education.
I was tested shortly after I started working there and assumed I was allergic to everything. Guess what- Not really. I always thought cats were the major cause of my ills, but it turns out to be dogs. Thinking back I realize that I always had both dogs and cats and they co-mingled, so I was reacting to the cat- It just happened to have DOG all over it.- Great to see this tribe!

Re: what are your allergies?
Tue, December 28, 2004 - 7:50 AMI am allergic to just about all pollens. Cats and dogs too, though my Bichon does not give me any problems unless I pet her and then rub my eyes. Dust and mold, too.
I'm also allergic to tree nuts and peanuts.
I used to think I was allergic to crab, but my allergist told me it was rare to be allergic to crab, but not to other shellfish (which I knew I could eat). So I tried crab one night and discovered that I was ok with it!
My mom had told me I was allergic to crab -- not sure where she got that one from. Perhaps I was as a child. She also told me I was allergic to alcohol, and that kept me from drinking till I was 21... :)

Re: what are your allergies?
Tue, December 28, 2004 - 11:56 AMIt's been many years since I've been testing but I used to be reactive to just about all animals, pollens dust etc...however food allergy testing was pretty non-specific 20 years ago, I'm wondering if anythings changed.
Today is my first day off wheat and I'm hopeful that I might feel a bit better.
Have had severe asthma, allergies and digestive issues all my life.
Anyone out there had success quiting certain foods? How long did it take to feel results?
Cheers. -

Tue, December 28, 2004 - 10:40 PM<<<<<<<<<<Anyone out there had success quiting certain foods? How long did it take to feel results? >>>>>>>>
I first quit wheat six months ago and every time I "cheat" and go back to even just eating a small amount, I find my body of balance, like I'll break out in zits or get constipated or have trouble waking up in the morning. I felt this change after only being a week off of wheat. It is my experience that even having a little bit makes me crave more , so I cant even have a small amount. Its like being addicted.
Wow, Ellen, smoke from feilds burning? -

Re: what are your allergies?
Thu, December 30, 2004 - 12:47 AMI'm addicted to sugar - though I can often live without it for periods of time. Also have wheat allergy but don't crave it. If I hafe something with wheat in it I notice it right away. I must absorb the allergen through the lining of my mouth. -

Re: what are your allergies?
Tue, June 19, 2007 - 4:23 PMI'm addicted to sugar too!
really bad
The only thing that helps me is too get rid af all the sugar and sweets also sweets friuts out of my house. If you do this in about 4-5 days your craving goes away. But it like cigarette or alcohol addiction it takes a lot of will power! out of site out of mind!

Re: what are your allergies?
Sun, January 2, 2005 - 11:44 PMi just joined this tribe and am glad to see it! i am allergic to dust. mold, some pollens, and dairy. i ahve been dairy free for almost two years now and i can tell immediately if i get even a little bit in restaurant food. ista-nauseau, retching, and massive headache, digestive probs and breakouts on face for 3-4 days after exporsure. i tried goat's mik cheese, and it did not give me the nausea and headache, but did cause digestive probs, bloating, and zits. i would love to see this tribe tak about recipes if there is anyone else who is allergic to dairy. -

Re: what are your allergies?
Mon, January 3, 2005 - 11:06 AMThanks for starting this Tribe. I've been wanting to share my findings about my allergies and learn from others so this is the perfect forum.
BANANAS - they make my nose peel (go figure) and throat itchy.
GRAPEFRUIT - makes my legs itch. didn't find this one out until I heard my grandmother had the same problem. cutting daily grapefruit juice out of my diet did the trick.
RED WINE - I'm sure I'll be posting more on this later as I have learned that my allergies are mostly limited to Californian and some Australian wines. European, South American and I think New Zealand wines don't bother me at all
EGGPLANT - burns the inside of my mouth
HAIR PRODUCTS - This has plagued me since I was a teenager. Aveda made me break out in zits. Most hair products give me a forehead rash and make my head itch. I have found a few products that work for me: Kiehls, Alterna, Rainbow kids shampoo, Phyto.
SKIN PRODUCTS - What doesn't bother me: Dermalogica Ultracalming cleanser (and most of their other products), Shepard's Lotion, Dove sensitive skin soap, Dr Bronner's kids unscented soap.
CATS - though a low dose (30 to 60 mg) of Allegra will help. Generally not allergic to long-haired or siamese. Sadly also allergic to some dogs but not sure what breeds.
HAYFEVER - not sure what I'm specifically allergic to, but some seasons I'm a wreck; others I am fine. I have a Honeywell HEPA filter which helps some. I also use 30 mg of Allegra (NOTE: this is the kids does which is half the average dose -- and 1/6th of what they are advertising on TV! -- but it does the trick) when it is bothering me. Sometimes bump that to 60 mg.
CIGARETTE SMOKE - my head is stuffed up within minutes when I am around it and it gives me a headache. can also nauseate me.
Interestingly enough, most of these allergies are/were shared by my father and his mother. I'm also told by my mom that I was allergic to breast milk as a child and had to have soy. -

Tue, December 12, 2006 - 8:24 AMHave you checked to see what common ingrediants these products may have that can cause your issues. I have to buy Nature's gate rainwater shampoos for the most part. I figured out the issue was Aloe, rice bran oils and Olive oils. Compare the labels if you have not done so yet.
As for the wine allergies, check the type of grapes they may be. Each area do different varietals.

Re: what are your allergies?
Wed, January 5, 2005 - 12:02 AMInteresting to find a tribe for allergies.
I have had the scratch testing done. My biggest allergies are various grass and tree pollens. Minor allergies are dust, molds, & wool. No food allergies fortunately.
-
Re: what are your allergies?
Thu, January 6, 2005 - 9:24 PMAs per my scratch test I'm allergic all the grasses I know and most trees except oak, cats and dog dander too. My major allergy is dust mites, which are everywhere, I'd love to get the pillow and mattress covers but can't afford them. I specifically asked to be tested for wheat and shellfish but the doc decided not too. Instead he tested for tree nuts and melons. I reacted to all the melons, which they said makes me suseptable to citrus allergies. Walnuts burn my mouth but I didn't react to tree nuts in the test and was told it's likely chemicals used in the production and to eat only organic nuts. I was pleased to find that I am not allergic to molds and mildew. I find that air pollutants like cigarette smoke and inscence make me extreamly congested. Also, many perfumes and scented lotions/soaps/shampoos make me congested or give me a headache, although I do not have skin sensitivities. Basically, I feel like I have a bad head cold year round. I've tried all the prescriptions and they do nothing but make me either sleepy or hyper. I term my condition as an immune deficiency, rather than just allergies and find bees pollen, selenium, zinc and a neti pot help, although I'm undiciplined in using them regularily. -

Wed, January 12, 2005 - 9:41 PMHi All,
And Hi Rebecca!
Well, I am allergic/intollerant to wheat gluten. In a few weeks I am heading to China for a three week trip, but i am nervous about the food situation. Mostly I am worried about the wheat gluten in soy sauce. I think I have some Chinese Phrases that will get my situation across, but....anyone have any travel experience in Asia with the same problem?
Thanks!!!! -

Re: what are your allergies?
Fri, January 21, 2005 - 9:01 PMIt's nice to have a place for the sensative to get to share this stuff without sounding whiny! my good friends are supportive, but i still feel a lot of eyes roll in the room if i talk about this subject too long.
Scratch tests revealed several allergies to me. Some were minor, but some were big. i knew i was sensative to stuff my whole life. the tests just proved it to me and validated the suspicions/
allergic to mold pretty darn bad. and some trees.
living in gerlach NV and being allergic to cottonwood trees almost knocked me on my ass at first.
The other really big one is soy. Soy is in bread, crackers, snacks... anything really. It's in almost every brand of soda and in virtually all, ok 99 percent of salad dressing. i usually make olive oil and vinegar at home. forget about restaurant food. i have to stick to mostly natural whole foods or i suffer bloody gastro hell. and i'm not brittish. i mean i bleed. it is really hard for me to avoid soy and if i mess up i relate to all the stuff you guys already said...
there's a great website i found which explains what soy hides in on labels.
www.geocities.com/HotSpring...ecoder.htm
i'm starting to wonder if i'm allergic to the modified soy. i would presume they use GM soy in the scratch test but i can't go back in time and ask what they used on me.
one of these days i'm going to find an all natural soy sauce and i'll eat sushi all night long.
as for cravings...
i DEFINATELY crave soy sauce for a whole day after sneaking sushi or soda.
as for Tinea Versicolor, I supposedly had that for a brief moment in college, but my doctor said it would go away if I washed my torso (that's where it was) with dandruff shampoo like H. & shoulders. Soemthing in the shampoo kills the stuff. it's a yeast i think. I never really saw it, just was told i had it and read up.
speaking of shampoo. if i walk down the soap isle, i about fall down. I get an asthma attack from it. that and perfume which can also trigger a migrane.
In addition to asthma, i supposedly have something called "hyperactive airways" which means certain things get triggered as an allergen and makes my throat close. kind of makes me think about the reply how our bodies have GOOD immune systems. sometimes i get mad mine is too good!
Also, My allergist turned me on to TWO creams that have saved me... Eucerin and Sarna. my excema was solved with eucerin.
I'm not a big name dropper of products but i will stake my life on them two any day.
Something i read once helped me understand why my allergies can be so varried. I heard that it's where the item is in your system when it gets noticed by your body that determines the reaction, so like... mouth is RIGHT AWAY and gastro is supposed to be "later" and some foods yell kick and scream the whole way through.
cheers! i think i've said enough for one post.
nice tribe! thanks so much.

Fri, March 4, 2005 - 5:51 AMBlake,
ps. any advice now for those with allergies who are thinking of travelling to China? -
-
Re: what are your allergies?
Sat, March 5, 2005 - 10:01 AMWhy, yes I do have some advice!
Before I left home, I made small, business card sized pieces of paper that had the Thai, Mandarin and Cantonese Characters for "I am allergic to Wheat Gluten", "I am allergic to Soy Sauce" (only the wheat gluten in it), and "Please make a meal without soy sauce". I cut and pasted the characters out of the Lonely Planet Phrasebooks for those languages.
I made lots of copies, and would simply hand the waitperson the paper, and they would read it and go, "ahhh", and usually take it to the cooks. They understood it everytime, and I had no problem getting the point across. Plus, my food always tasted delicious, (I miss the Kung Pao Chicken in Beijing).
If anyone needs copies of these, I would be very happy to email them to you, and you can print them out for yourself. I can also print them out and mail it, if that is easier. It made travel a breeze and one of my biggest worries about traveling in Asia have now been dispelled!
Whoopie!

Re: what are your allergies?
Mon, March 7, 2005 - 11:22 PMI'm allergic to wheat too and use these kinds of flour: spelt, amaranth, rice, tapioca, quinoa, millet, rye and that includes white rye. If making bread, I usually use spelt with a lighter flour like the amaranth or tapioca or another or with equal amounts of white rye. Spelt is a very dense flour and so it helps to add a lighter flour. Pie crust made with spelt is pretty good though. My next challenge to make pizza with some kind of flour and use goat cheese (I'm allergic to cow milk). My boyfriend and I have been pondering the pizza making idea for several weeks now and how we can both eat it without it affecting my allergies and something he would enjoy. Anybody else have some ideas? Oh and yes, we have tried the vegan cheese (disgusting) almond milk cheese (gross) and some other kind of non-dairy cheese that I'm happy to forget. I can handle goat and sheep cheese though and that helps.

Re: what are your allergies?
Tue, March 8, 2005 - 4:33 PMJust an allergy alert note to those who read WindWomans' wonderful post above, that she is describing substitute flours for wheat allergies, and not gluten allergies/intollerance. I unfortunantly suffer from the latter, and so flours containing the dreaded gluten such as wheat, Spelt, Rye, Barley, and Oats are a huge no-no.
However, rice, tapioca, quinoa, millet, potato and amaranth are all groovy flours for the Gluten Intollerant individuals.
Hope this helps!

Re: what are your allergies?
Wed, March 9, 2005 - 9:12 AMNo gluten for me either! I tried to do spelt and oats in moderation but after having an attack more than once when consuming spelt, I decided out with the spelt. I've been absolutely gluten free for several months now and I can tell a difference. *S*
I was reading also that often during our lives as we age, even if one is able to digest gluten when younger the older we get the less we're able to. I'm honestly thinking I should eliminate grains period for a while. It seems when I do this I feel better, but damn nation, it's getting where I can't eat much of anything. I lost down to 99 lbs a summer or two ago, and that's not good! I'm small, but 99 lbs is too much soooooo! I started taking oil supplements and flax seeds, eating more nuts which helps me maintain my weight! But even those will hurt my stomach!

Sun, March 6, 2005 - 11:22 PMHi Jay,
Quinoa and Millet both are free of the bad "Gluten" thats found in many wheat related grains.
So, breads made with Quinoa and Millet are ok for gluten-free eaters (like me).

Re: what are your allergies?
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 1:09 PMHi all, I am new to this tribe.
As far as airborne allergens are concerned, I am allergic to grass pollens and dust mites (runny nose, itchy eyes, nothing unusual, and they seem to get milder over time).
I am also allergic to these foods: oats, wheat, barley, and rye (but not gluten); millet (apparently all cereals except rice and corn); peanuts, soy, lentils, peas and beans (apparently all legumes); sesame seeds, quinoa; broccoli, brussels sprouts; bananas, kiwis, avocados, tomatoes, strawberries, melon, pears; garlic, vinegar (acetic acid); hops (and also cannabis); new potatoes.
I have had blood tests for some of these foods and they were only marginally positive (up to the high end of the "moderate" range). I have also had skin prick tests and they were all clearly negative. This list was built over a period of a year and a half, based on initial blood tests and extended by food challenges. I have learned to be extremely suspicious of new foods, but I keep making tests to extend my list. I also maintain a list of known-safe foods, and fortunately it is longer than the list above. I am a vegetarian (and I can eat milk products and eggs).
My allergic reactions to foods are generally limited to the digestive system, so I have been told that they are not life-threatening. I get diarrhea, gas, bloated feeling, pain. It usually takes about a week for me to recover (ground flax seeds speed up recovery a lot). Some foods (such as wheat, garlic, and pears) also seem to affect my brain (depression, headaches, and hyperactivity, respectively). In general it takes only traces to cause a reaction, so when I live with other people I am being extremely careful with cooking gear and I avoid sharing risky items (butter, jam, etc). I strictly avoid all prepared food and restaurants.
My food allergies makes ordinary life a little challenging, but still quite enjoyable. :-) -
-
Re: what are your allergies?
Mon, December 19, 2005 - 1:25 PMHey! I'm allergic to sesame seeds and oil too. When I was a kid, tried to convince some doctors that I had the allergy but they insisted it was all psychosomatic. Ha-ha. Boy, were they wrong. One time at a Christmas party I asked, What's that? and was told it was hummus. It looked harmless. So I grabbed a veggie and scooped some up. One swallow and my throat started closing up. Gag! Panic! Hummus is ground sesame seed paste.
My siblings got most of my Dad's allergies -- they all seem to have some kind of upper respiratory problem. -
-
Re: what are your allergies?
Mon, December 19, 2005 - 1:32 PMDon't know if I could have died from the experience. Probably not. I grabbed some ice and started sucking on it, hoping it'd slow the swelling. And it did. But my throat was swollen (but not closed) for about 12 hours. Drag. Someone at the party suggested I go to the ER. But those places are a drag. Didn't feel like waiting hours at night. Now I always keep Benadryl on hand.
Other times I've had some severe hives on my skin within 20 minutes of eating some food. The odd thing is the foods usu. don't cause any kind of reaction in me. So can only deduce that the cause is some extra food additive. Happened from eating a Wendy's hamburger and a plate of linguini in white clam sauce.

I am allergic to dust, mold, and corn for sure.

Re: what are your allergies?
Sun, August 21, 2005 - 8:44 PMMy two sons have various allergies:
EJ is 3 and is allergic to egg, peanut (approaching anaphylaxis level), dogs and cats. He had more allergies when first tested a year ago, some have reduced and some have disappeared through avoidance and desensitization. Peanut has however skyrocketted in the past year. There are a lot off egg-free birthday cake recipes available on the net, but he won't even try any cake and I believe it may be because cakes containing egg make his mouth tingle.
Liam is 5 and is allergic to soy bean, peanut, brewers yeast (a problem for Aussies because that's what Vegemite is made from!), dog, cat, rye grass, plantain weeds, olive (does that include olive oil?), wattle (another Aussie plant), 3 molds (alternaria, cladosporium, aspergillus), and dustmites. Most of his allergies are fairly mild, but his peanut allergy is a worry as the levels were high despite no exposure since his brother's intial peanut allergy diagnosis about 2yrs ago.

Re: what are your allergies?
Mon, August 22, 2005 - 1:38 AMWheat...it grogs me out for days, among other things. Most days I can find alternative foods. But wheat is such an engrained (no pun intended) part of our culture that it is difficult to avoid it all the time.
Beets and blue cheese make me itchy. Cold beet borscht makes me nauseated. I avoid the beets. I love blue cheese too much to avoid it all the time, but I watch how much I eat. I also get itchy with penicillin and suspect it's the mold in the cheese I'm reacting to.

Re: what are your allergies?

Sun, December 4, 2005 - 10:42 AMmold, mildew, smoke, dust, penicillan

I was tested as a child, and these came up. I also have excercise induced asthma.
BUT this past year my body has sort of gone haywire. My new MD(yay for insurance) thinks that the reasons for my fatigue and suceptibility to infections stem from allergies. That instead of being "lucky" enough to get hayfever or hives, my immune system is being suppressed, and my body is sort of shutting down.
She had me on Claritin, but it doesn't really work. I don't have outdoor allergies. Pollen doesn't affect me at all, unless i get in in my nose, in which case its tickley. lol!
I irrigate with saline, and she has me on nasarel, which i hate because it burns, but having semi-clear sinuses is sort of worth it. I guess.
I think I'd like to try Flonase, because it seems that my sensitivities are including exhaust and chemical fragrances/perfumes. Does anyone here have experience with it?

Re: what are your allergies?
Mon, March 13, 2006 - 2:52 PMI found in June 2005, that I'm allergic to corn. I have an anaphylactic reaction when I ingest it, and I seem to also have a dermatological response when I use products that contain corn derivatives. The most frustrating part is that so many things are derived from corn: citric acid, dextrose/maltose, etc., and they aren't obviously "corn" related like cornstarch, cornmeal, etc.

Re: what are your allergies?
Sat, October 14, 2006 - 10:39 AMI'm allergic to everything. I have weekly injections for inhalants and use sublingual drops for food allergies. I'm literally allergic to everything. My immune system has completely shut down at this point. The docs say I literally worked myself into a medical stupor. I use to work 80-90 hours a week. Then I had to have an emergent surgery last December and haven't been right since. They have since found other things wrong with me. I had another surgery in March of this year. I have only worked the months of February and March of this year, the rest of the time I have been on disability. Who knew that you could be allergic to work?!?!?!?!?!?! -

Sun, October 15, 2006 - 8:58 AMI never would have thunk it:-) I love the type of work I do, so it wasn't a matter of hating my job or badwork. But I was overworked and it was a high stress environment, but I enjoy the stress of it too. But I do agree with your equation. I hate the thought of a career change, but I have been working on accepting it. Thanks for your words!!!

Re: what are your allergies?
Thu, January 25, 2007 - 12:06 PMHi all I'm new here :-)
I guess this topic is as good as any to start with huh?
I have Celiac Disease so No Gluten
I'm Lactose Intolerant so No Dairy
I'm allergic to most antibiotics, codeine, some antidepressants..
Dust, pollen, pine trees, saw dust, pet dander, feathers, certain types of frozen strawberries..
My diet has to be meticulous where gluten and lactose are concerned. I don't eat what I don't personaly cook. I do a lot of label reading. I rarely take over the counter meds or the prescribed ones for that matter. Other than that ... I spend a lot of time cleaning.. trying to stay well...
Nice to meet yall,
anni

Sat, May 19, 2007 - 9:38 AM#1) Cats & #2) Molds, # 3) pollens the list is to long to list here.... keeps going and going and going..... Most have been helped with visits to acupuncturist. This has worked very well but has taken patience over time. I have been doing acupucture for at least 5 years for various other things as well. I highly recommend seeing an acupuncturist for treatments for alot of what you might need. -

Re: what are your allergies?
Mon, July 9, 2007 - 7:29 PMDUST(I don't dust! lol When I have to, I wear a mask and I use wet clothes and the vacuum. I use a Hepa filter in my room and special bags for my vacuum cleaner. I have a mattress cover and pillow covers. I wash all my bedding once every month or 2 even though they recommend every week )
CATS ( I try to resist, but sometimes weaken and pet them anyway)
DOGS (less of a problem, my allergy isn't as severe and I'm a cataholic not a dogaholic)
SULFITES (I don't drink wine or champagne and I'm careful about dried fruits and bottled lemon juice)
CHOCOLATE( I don't eat chocolate when I'm around cats, otherwise, there's really no totally avoiding it.)
MOLD (I always keep my bedroom window cracked open and my bathroom window. Air circulation helps prevent mold)
WEEDS and GRASSES (I never sit directly on the grass, I use a blanket or my jacket)
WHEAT (I've been in denial about this one. I'm trying to replace wheat with rice crackers and kamut bread)
RYE ( I'm Jewish! This proves that there's no God!)
FEATHERS ( I don't use down)

Re: what are your allergies?
Sat, May 23, 2009 - 1:35 AMdust, dust mites, mold, weed, trees, grass, cats, dogs, strawberries.
Plus my skin seems to react to a lot of things that touch it, especially my face. The only thing that goes on my face now is Cetaphil lotion and Dove soap for sensitive skin. It reacts to even vitamin E oil anymore.
It was pretty much hell in my apartment this past winter because they air didn't circulate at all. I was so sick due to my allergies. My skin (mainly my face) was inflamed and sensitive and I was having breathing problems and was sneezing all the time. I need to find a solution to this before next winter.
