I just found out that there is an actual disease that entails gluten allergies. Has anyone else heard of this?

    Aloha,

I have heard of this disease. When I did in home health care on the mainland, I did have some patients with it. If they accidentally ingested any of the proteins, they got sick and sometimes ended up in the hospital on IV solution. I also have had a couple of friends that had it and they had to be fastidious about what they ate or they would get ill. It is a genetic disease and seems to be an autoimmune disease as well. The lower intestine does not absorb appropriately and more specifically, the villi on the mucosa lining is damaged. There is no cure. A diagnosed individual just has to be very careful not to ingest any gluten from not just wheat but other grains as well. I believe they also might have problems digesting certain nuts but I'm not sure.

Although I've never been tested, I decided to eliminate gluten just to see if it helped because many with Fibromyalgia or M.S. fair better when they eliminate gluten. It has definitely helped!
