Easy Peanut Densensitization

PLEASE NOTE THAT PEANUT ANAPHYLACTICS SHOULD NOT TRY THIS.

Both my sons are allergic to peanut and I was worried that, with the rate their allergy levels were increasing, at least one of them was headed for anaphylaxis. On Friday we tried the "Nutella challenge". I don't know if Nutella is available in the US but you may have something similar, it is a choc-hazelnut spread. We have several brands but need to buy the original because it contains a lot of peanut oil; some cheap imitations do not.

In the Nutella challenge. the boys tried tiny amounts of Nutella and increased to eating a whole Nutella sandwich... IN A HOSPITAL AND SUPERVISED BY AN ALLERGIST just in case of anaphylaxis. Thankfully, they had no reaction. Now they need to eat Nutella every day at home to desensitize to peanut. Their levels will be retested in July 2006, and if they are low enough, we can try peanut butter desensitization. They will then need to continue eating peanut forever - which sounds odd for peanut allergy people - but this is how to keep desensitized. And it's more convenient that avoiding peanuts, and a helluva lot healthier than anaphylaxis.

Until 5-10 years ago doctors thought peanut allergy was permanent and didn't even try desensitzation. Now it can be done. Hope this helps some of you.

I guess I have a couple of questions that you may not be able to answer.
Would it work for adults and what about someone that gets stomach aches rather than respiratory problems.

I think it would be worth a try in both cases, certainly for adults, maybe for stomach aches. It would be best if you could find a doctor or an allergist to ask.

(My sons were not up to the breathing difficulty stage, they only get a rash consisting of white lumps (welts) and redness (erythema). If peanuts caused breathing difficulties we may not have been able to try this.)

Well hi all, I haven't been in for ages!

My kids have had their yearly allergy retests, having been on the Nutella for a year to desensitise to peanuts.

Mr 6: It worked! His levels are now low enough to take the next step - up to a teaspoon of peanut butter a few times a week. It does upset his stomach though; in the beginning he'd have to run to the toilet within 5 minutes, but it's improving.

Mr 4: It didn't work! Apparently this is unusual, but it made no difference to his levels at all. This caused a dilemma - Mr 6 MUST have PB to continue desensitisation, but Mr 4 can't be near it! So the allergist tried a tiny amount, first on his arm, then face, then tongue, and there was no major reaction. So now he has a TINY amount a few times a week too.

Bad news is, they both hate peanut butter!

Worse news is, Nutella is no longer made with peanut oil, because too many people are allergic to it!! I don't know how everyone else will begin desensitation now. :o(
